   Welcome
 From the Congress President
Dear friends and colleagues,
On behalf of the Moroccan Society of Neurosurgeons and the Pan African Association of Neurological Sciences, I have the pleasure to invite you to the 13th World Congress of Neurological Surgery to be held in Marrakesh.

Under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom of Morocco and the city of Marrakesh are proud to be the hosts of this historical event. Indeed, it will be the first time that such a congress is held on the African continent. Furthermore, it also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the WFNS. The organizing committee will spare no effort to offer the WFNS a congress that is the reflection of the progress made in neurosurgery in the world over the past 50 years.

The theme of the congress will be : Bridging the Gap in Neurosurgery in Marrakesh : Crossroads of the World's Cultures. This title was chosen because of Morocco's geographical location, the bridge between Europe and Africa, East and West, the richness of its culture and its people, its openness to others and its concern about the future. In this spirit, a number of means were set up to encourage the participation of young neurosurgeons. They will be able to benefit from reduced registration fees and hotel rates. Also, two forums are scheduled to deal with topics they are concerned with.

Among the proposed social events, a concert by the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra will be performed. The proceeds from this concert will be donated to the WFNS Foundation for the Training of Young Neurosurgeons from Developing Countries.

The preliminary scientific program is a collaborative effort between the different members of the scientific committee. It is also a work in progress and the final edition will be available in the congress program. It will be a magnificent gathering of techniques, ideas, science and concepts.

The social program is designed to showcase the best the city has to offer and allow everyone to take advantage of one of the world's most beautiful locations.

On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 13th World Congress of Neurological Surgery in the fascinating city of Marrakesh.

Abdeslam EL Khamlichi M.D.
President of the Congress

From the President of the WFNS
Dear Colleagues,
It is a real pleasure to take this opportunity to welcome you to the WFNS World Congress of Neurological Surgery to be held in Marrakesh, Morocco June 19 - 24th 2005. This will be the 13th World Congress of Neurosurgery and promises to be the most exciting such event that has ever occurred. The host society, the Moroccan Society of Neurological Surgeons, has been working diligently to plan an absolutely outstanding scientific and social program.

Marrakesh is an elegant and exotic venue for our meeting and has superb facilities for the scientific sessions and for the accommodations for everyone attending. There are beautiful hotels that range from the opulent to very simple accommodations for families at very low cost. Morocco is a stable, safe and beautiful country with warm and friendly people and a long tradition of hospitality and graciousness which everyone will enjoy and appreciate. Marrakesh is readily accessible from virtually everywhere in the world and the infrastructure for tourism is well developed so that members can enjoy a wide variety of attractions from the sea to the mountains, from the souks of the cities to Roman ruins in the countryside.

The various satellite meetings will take advantage of the many opportunities for diversity available in this wonderful country. Moroccan cuisine is a real delight, the planned entertainment and social events will be extraordinary. I encourage all neurosurgeons, particularly young neurosurgeons from every part of the world to attend this important event.

Sincerely,

Edward R. Laws, MD, FACS
WFNS President
